OK, this is something I want to do before I die, and sooner rather than later: take about 10 months for a leisurely bicycle ride around Australia. It’s about 20000 km in total. I am following the ride by Mark and Denise, who have been on the road for more than six months and have almost reached Perth via the northern route from Sydney. These two, whom you can follow on their site, call themselves ‘Sprung Chickens‘ since they are no longer … spring chickens. They are in their late 40s, provide down to earth daily updates, pictures and maps.
Actually, the first to do the ride was Donald Mackay. This complete madman rode a single-geared, leather-seated bicycle around the continent in 1899 on what would have been mostly dirt roads.
