Léon Bloy: Great Anti-Cleric and Great Moustache

In response to my post on anti-clericalism, Bruce mentioned one of the great anti-clerics, Léon Bloy (1846-1917). Not only did he live a life poverty, begging from all and sundry so he could write, but he had a moustache to rival Stalin’s:

  1. A wonderful example of Bloy on the bourgeois:

Many people who are good heathens but want to be assisted by religion on their deathbed, are apt to say: “Je ne veux pas mourir comme un chien; I don’t want to die like a dog.” Léon Bloy commented: “I have never understood why a man who lives like a pig does not want to die like a dog.”

  2. an anti-cleric? a great christian, he has this saint anger like john the baptiste. One of the greatest writer of the 20th… what a man! what a life! it’s not litterature, it’s a scream, it’s life and more!
