Lenin’s letter template

A little earlier, I quoted an opening by a letter from Lenin, but now, with more information, it is possible to construct the Lenin letter template.

Opening:

Dear …,

I am writing under the fresh impression of your letter, which I have just read. Its senseless twaddle is so exasperating that I am unable to suppress the desire to state my opinion frankly.

Content:

Include phrases such as: ‘central organ of tittle-tattle and squabbling’; ‘muddled thinking’; ‘flirting with the opportunists’; ‘unprincipled and hypocritical people’; ‘mutual distrust and suspicion’.

Close:

‘I cannot share your regret at not having met. After your tricks and your conniving attitude, I do not wish to have anything to do with you except in a purely official way, and only in writing’.

Lenin, Collected Works, vol. 7, pp. 464-71.

  1. This is delightful. I have been enjoying your snippets from Lenin, especially his use of biblical references. You are really on to something there. Fascinating.

On another note, I was reading Michel Serres little book Malfeasance: Appropriation through Pollution? on the train today, recently released in English translation. Have you read it? There are only two chapters. The first is entitled “Urine, manure, blood, sperm” and is subtitled “The lived foundations of property rights”, so that gives a hint as to where he is going. Chapter 1 took me to the city. I’m saving the rest for another day.
