Review of European Studies – a dodgy journal, so avoid submitting articles to it. Why? You may receive an email, mentioning an article of yours that the author of the email has read. Then you will be invited to contribute to the journal. Flattering, of course, easy to be sucked in, even though the article mentioned has nothing to do with European studies. And the journal site looks innocent enough: an open-access journal, published by the Canadian Center of Science and Education.

So you begin the submission process, after having laboriously copy-edited your article to fit in with the weird requirements – American Psychological Association style. Click through, upload article, fill in abstract and keywords, add your own details. And then, just before the final submission button, the following words appear:

Article Publication Fee- Review of European Studies: 300.00 (USD). If the paper is accepted for publication, you will be asked to pay an Article Publication Fee.

This information is certainly not on the front page of the journal, and it takes some effort to find this line on the website. Don’t want to advertise this feature of the journal too prominently.

Standard publication is exploitative enough, with the labour of authors barely recompensed, if at all, relying on the ideological framework that is built around publication. So why not up the ante and push the exploitation a little further? After all, it’s done frequently in the sciences and so on. So why not here?

Avoid them at all costs.
