Two wise old women gave me an insight into this question. One of them asked me a couple of years ago:

‘How are things?’

‘Nothing to complain about,’ I said.

‘That doesn’t seem to stop many people from complaining,’ she said.

And then many years ago my mother (believe it or not) gave me some wise advice:

‘The sign of intelligence is the ability to make the most of the circumstances in which you find yourself.’

When I begin to think of complaining about something, these words have a knack of coming back to me.
