Will Trump ‘win’?

I keep having a gut feeling that Trump will pull it off in the circus called ‘US democracy’. Yesterday, I had a somewhat interesting argument with an evangelist for the the ‘American dream’, for ‘freedom’ and ‘democracy’ – US imperialist style (this person is working in China). Our disagreements ranged over the DPRK (North Korea), China and the struggle between Trump and Clinton in the United States.

At one point, he said that he wishes three things for the disgruntled, exploited and shafted people of the central and southern parts of the USA:

  1. That they be educated and moved to the vicinity of the major hubs in the northeast and western parts.
  2. That they die off.
  3. That a country would attack the United States and obliterate them.

I couldn’t help thinking that this is precisely the attitude that will ensure such denigrated people will support Trump.

  1. When I look at the divide in the USA, I am always left thinking that the Civil War never really ended. Clinton will probably scrape through. The lesser of two evils, but only just. The South Korea/DPRK sabre-rattling is just yet another diversion away from the real issues that face the American working class.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. I promise you that Clinton has already been selected to be president. No one seems to believe me – I guess it sounds like a wacky conspiracy theory – but I really think that the “elections” are nothing but show. The U.S. capitalist state is run like an enormous corporation. The ruling class board of directors interview and select a CEO to hire; they do not allow the employees to participate in the decision. At best, the ballot box is nothing more than the slaves’ suggestion box.

    1. I like that: the slaves’ suggestion box.
In general, I think you are right that corporate power controls what goes on, but for some reason we seem to be – in some parts of the world – in times when business does not seem to be able to run as usual. There is something highly unpredictable and spontaneous about the groundswells. Unfortunately, they are usually channelled in certain ways.
