How to find your soul

As Mao observes in ‘On the Correct Handling of Contradictions Among the People’:

Not to have a correct political orientation is like not having a soul

  1. Dear Roland,

Remember when I sent you that link to the Marxist treatise on UFOs a while back.

Well, I looked up the author – J. Posadas (1912–1981) – and found out that he had many other weird ideas, most notably the idea that a world socialist revolution can occur but only through nuclear war and annihilation.

As he put it; “Nuclear war [equals] revolutionary war. It will damage humanity but it will not – it cannot – destroy the level of consciousness reached by it… Humanity will pass quickly through a nuclear war into a new human society – Socialism. […] After the destruction commences, the masses are going to emerge in all countries – in a short time, in a few hours.” (1)

And that; “The atomic war is going to provoke a true inferno on Earth. But it will not impede Communism. […] Capitalism cannot defend itself in an atomic war except by putting itself in caves and attempting to destroy all that it can. The masses, in contrast, are going to come out, will have to come out, because it is the only way to survive, defeating the enemy… The apparatus of capitalism, police, army, will not be able to resist… It will be necessary to organize the workers’ power immediately. […] The matter however stems from a historic necessity, not a number of years. The atomic war is inevitable. And it will be followed, immediately, during and afterwards, by the world triumph of the Socialist Revolution.” (1)

Posadas and his organisation, the Fourth International Posadist, were considered by many, including those on the socialist Marxist left to be a ridiculous cult.

As David Walters, a volunteer at the Marxist International Archive and director of the Holt Labor Library, said, they were “an extreme cult,” and that, “They were considered odd and weird were totally ignored by other tendencies and internationals.” (3)
